Forget 5G - Trump calls for the introduction of 6G technology

Fifth-generation cellular technology, which is still only in the very earliest stages of concept and development, seems to already be old news for the President of the US.

Amid something of a technological arms race with China, and during controversies surrounding Huawei and surveillance, Donald Trump took what might be described as an especially Trumpian approach to the situation, reaching immediately for his Twitter account.

Fairly inexplicably, he tweeted the following: “I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible.”

The President seems concerned about China achieving 5G capabilities before the US. Even at this stage, there is a huge amount of development to be done.

But the very concept of 6G is so far from coming into existence that it hardly makes any sense, particularly since we’re still a long way from there being a fifth generation of network specification to grow from.
