Spotify has broken the 100 million paying user threshold, comfortably beating competitor Apple Music.

The service now has over 100 million Spotify Premium subscribers, having recorded 32 per cent year-on-year growth. It now boasts 217 million active users worldwide, including those on its free tier.

Apple Music, its closest competitor, lags far behind, with 50 million paid users as of April.

This is despite Apple Music taking a lead in the US, with 28 million in the country against Spotify’s 26 million.

Spotify’s user jump was helped in part by its launch in India in February. It now boasts 2 million users there.

Breaking the 100 million Premium subscriber threshold is the latest milestone in Spotify’s meteoric growth. It represents an increase of more than 300 per cent on its Q1 2016 figures, when it reported 30 million paying users.

The streaming giant expects to have as many as 228 million users by the end of this quarter, of which it says between 107 and 110 million will be paying subscribers.

But despite its user growth, Spotify is still failing to turn a profit. The company reported losses of €142 million during the first quarter, down from €169 million in the same period in 2018.
