Chinese search giant Baidu has taken Google's place as the second most popular provider of smart speakers worldwide.

New research from insight firm Canalys found that Baidu shipped 4.5 million smart speakers during Q2, compared with Google's 4.3 million.

This is despite Baidu only offering its devices in China.

But Amazon remains the market leader, shipping 6.6 million of its Echo devices during the period.

According to Canalys, Baidu now has a 17.3 per cent share of the global smart speaker market, up by 0.7 per cent on the same period last year.

Google, meanwhile, saw its market share slashed from 32.3 per cent to 16.7 per cent.

Overall, the global smart speaker market grew by 55.4 per cent during Q2 2019, with 26.1 million devices shipped in total.

Amongst Amazon and Google devices, the US market accounted for almost half of all shipments.
