Video tutoring platform Verbling - the San Francisco-based startup - has been acquired by Busuu, one of the most popular language learning solutions.

The acquisition was completed for an undisclosed sum, though it is thought that the transaction was in the tens of millions. London-based EdTech company Busuu has been growing at an ever-quicker rate, recently surpassing a total of 100 million global users.

Verbling’s team members, including Co-founders Mikael Bernstein (CEO) and Gustav Rydstedt (CTO), will join Busuu following the deal.

Busuu will now be able to expand into the live video education market. Verbling offers more than 10,000 pre-vetted live teachers, offering interactive 1-1 lessons in almost 60 languages.

Busuu's Co-founder and CEO, Bernhard Niesner, said: “No matter how smart technology becomes, language will always be about human interaction – which is exactly why Busuu was built around a learning community.

“Offering live video tutoring through our acquisition of Verbling is a natural progression for our business, and gives us the potential to expand beyond just language learning in the future.”

Bernstein, Verbling Co-founder & CEO, said: “We are very excited to be joining forces with Busuu’s talented and experienced team.

“Combining our world-class tutors with Busuu’s AI-powered platform will enable language learners across the globe to reach proficiency even faster.”
