The Evening Standard is launching a new podcast billed as the 'voice of the paper'.

The first edition of The Leader podcast will be released today, offering exclusive opinion and analysis from some of the paper's writers, along with documentary-style features.

It will also feature extracts from the Standard's leader column, which outlines the paper's editorial outlook on the day's main stories.

The 15-minute podcast will be released daily at 4pm, Monday to Friday, and will run for an initial three-month trial..

Commenting on the launch, Evening Standard editor George Osborne said: “Our editorial column has always spoken for our readers - now you can hear it too.

“I’m excited that the Evening Standard is at the forefront of change - bringing people the news in a different, modern way.  In these turbulent times, this podcast will help you stay ahead of the news”

David Tomchak, Digital Editor-in-Chief, added: “Our audio team have been working on a number of exciting tech, content and commercial opportunities and partnerships over the last 18 months and this podcast will bring together the best of all that hard work.”

The Leader podcast is being produced by a dedicated digital audio news team who the Standard say are also working on interactive "voice AI" current affairs content for smart speakers.

“London doesn’t stop innovating, and neither do we,” said Chris Stone, xecutive Producer of Video & Audio. “Daily podcasts, Voice AI and smart speakers provide an opportunity to build interactive, habit-forming relationships with new and existing audiences, and to continue our unprecedented digital growth – in the UK and beyond.”
