Facebook is experimenting with hiding the number of Likes on News Feed posts.

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong spotted code that seems to show that the company is planning to run tests of hidden Like counts on its Android app.

The story was later confirmed by Facebook to TechCrunch.

The test follows a similar move from Instagram, which is also owned by Facebook. The photo-sharing platform is currently running tests hiding like counts in seven countries including Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the Instagram test, Mark Zuckerberg said he hopes users will become "“less interested in how many likes a post gets, and focus more on connecting with other people.”

Facebook has lost ground to Instagram and Snapchat, which are now many users' preferred platforms for everyday sharing.

Hiding Like counts is thought to be part of Facebook's strategy for recovering its user base, and steadying the all-important ad spend on the platform.
