Netflix is still shipping DVDs - and it just sent its five billionth

Netflix's DVD subscription service has shipped its five billionth disc, the company announced yesterday.

DVD Netflix, the streaming giant's mail-order disc subscription service, has been in operation for 21 years. When the company's streaming offering was initially launched in 2007, it was only available as an added product for disc subscribers.

As Variety reports, Netflix split the two offerings into separate businesses in 2011. It now has around 2.4 million subscribers, down from a peak of 14 million in 2011.

But despite a dwindling customer base, the DVD service still turns a profit of around $46 million a year.

According to the company's Twitter account, the five billionth disc shipped was a copy of Elton John biopic Rocketman.
