NatWest offers voice-only banking with Google Home

NatWest has become the first UK bank to offer customers access to their accounts through voice-enabled speakers.

The bank has launched a Google Home app that allows customers to ask questions about their balance or recent transactions without the need for a screen.

The scheme is the trial phase of a larger project which NatWest say will eventually give customers the opportunity to conduct full banking tasks through voice-enabled devices.

This could include money transfers and bill payments.

NatWest say the Google Home service will be available to customers who set it up through their existing online banking service.

But access to the app will require customers to say two of the four digits of a PIN number assigned to them, potentially raising privacy and security questions.

NatWest also say they are aware of potential consumer concerns about having their banking information broadcast across a room containing a voice-activated speaker.
