Facebook is developing a new app called Threads, which encourages constant communication between close friendship groups.

As The Verge reports, Threads is being built as a companion app to Instagram, and will offer users new sharing tools to keep in constant contact with the "close friends" list they've built on the photo sharing app.

Threads will reportedly allow users to automatically share information such as their location and battery life, alongside more traditional media of the sort already supported by Instagram's direct messaging function.

It is thought that Threads is Facebook's latest attempt to take on Snapchat, which is widely used as a private messaging platform.

Screenshots obtained by The Verge appear to show an option to have the user's status constantly updated, broadcasting information such as whether they are currently 'on the move'.

Threads does not currently have a release date.
