Facebook is hiring a team of journalists as it prepares for the launch of its own news offering.

The news tab will include original content written by journalists on staff for Facebook.

But the company has said that the majority of the content will be surfaced by algorithms.

Business Insider reports that Facebook's team of journalists will number less than ten - far fewer than the 30 currently employed by its rival Apple News.

The latter's offering includes a star editor poached from New York Magazine, and is being touted as the 'Netflix for news'.

Apple are reportedly investing heavily in fact-checking, to ensure that all the content that appears on the platform is reputable.

Facebook's own news product will first have to shrug off the reputation of its erstwhile Trending tab, which was heavily criticised for a slew of 'fake news'.
