Former head of Vine Jason Toff has moved to Facebook to head up the company's New Product Experimentation (NPE) team.

In a blogpost Facebook announced the launch of the team, which it says will begin to launch new consumer-focused apps "in the coming weeks".

The NPE team will be tasked with building "entirely new experiences" by creating "small, focused apps", the company says.

After leaving Vine in 2016 Toff worked on VR projects for Google.

Vine was acquired by Twitter in 2012, but the social network ended support for the app in 2016. It was closed the following year.

Vine founder Dom Hofmann has long been trailing a Vine replacement and, as we previously reported, in April it was announced that his new app, Byte, had opened to beta testers.

Byte, which also hosts short-form video content, is likely to have stiff competition from new entrants into the market including cult hit TikTok.
