Amazon is set to open a series of pop-up shops on High Streets across the UK in its latest challenge to established retailers.

The 'Clicks and Mortar' stores will feature otherwise online-only businesses selling through Amazon, and will also include Amazon Lockers from which customers can collect orders.

The year-long trial is the first stage of a new scheme developed by Amazon in collaboration with small business support network Enterprise Nation.

Amazon says the scheme will give online businesses their first opportunity to trade in brick and mortar stores.

But the online giant has been heavily criticised for its own impact on the High Street landscape.

Retail groups have for years pressured the government to take action to support conventional shops that are under strain from Amazon's discount pricing.

Others have called for a flat tax on major retailers to fund reductions in business rates, which are considered to be one of the major contributing factors to the demise of some struggling High Street shops.
