Tutor House connects students with personally interviewed and DBS-checked tutors.

It was founded by ex-teacher Alex, who worked in the educational industry for 14 years, teaching Psychology for eight years at a school in London. Dissatisfied with the state of education, Alex founded Tutor House to provide access to a top quality and personalised education.

Founder: Alex Dyer

Founded: 2013

We heard from Alex about the foundation of Tutor House.

Why did you start Tutor House?

I was a teacher for eight years before starting Tutor House, teaching Psychology as head of department. I’d had enough of how schools were run and how, as a teacher, we were just filling in forms and not helping kids. I wanted to try to do something that made a difference in education.

Tell us more about the tech behind the product.

We match tutors to students based on personality type, subject, level and location. We offer online tutoring via our interactive platform which has video, audio and whiteboard features.

Tutors also offer in-person tutoring; the technology allows students to match with tutors in their specific area, and tutors can easily travel to them.

Where are you at right now?

We have doubled growth each year since 2013. We've grown our experienced tutor database to 12,000 and have a team of 12 amazing people who keep everything working and everyone happy. We also work with a number of schools and charities, giving back as much as we can.

What are your aims for the next year?

We have a number of new features and products that we are releasing in 2020. We have expanded throughout the UK in 2019, and we plan to expand online in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia in 2020.

What's been the hardest thing about getting Tutor House off the ground?

Not having a business partner. I wanted to start a business and had a good idea how it would and could work, but I didn’t get that daily support that I think would have really helped.

When you are trying to do everything (accounts, marketing, sales, PR and content etc) yourself, you spread yourself way too thin and you can’t focus on getting things done. Always start with another founder... but not a friend!

Why should more people be using Tutor House?

Results. I have 15 years' experience in the sector and it’s a numbers game. There is no way that one teacher can communicate effectively and achieve results for 30 students in the same class. But one-to-one tutoring gets those results. We've had students go from Ds to As with just 20 hours of specialist support.

How much will it cost users - and why is it worth the investment?

It’s affordable compared to other options. You can find a tutor with five-plus years of experience for £30 per hour. A £600 investment to get your son or daughter into a school, onto an apprenticeship, or into a top university is a great choice. Our prices range from £30 to £100 per hour depending on exactly what you are looking for.
