The BBC’s former Washington and Brussels Bureau Chief Simon Wilson has been appointed Regional Editor for the BBC World Service Europe and Americas Region.

When he takes up the role in August 2019, Simon will provide managerial and editorial leadership to about 300 BBC World Service staff working for the Russian, Ukraine, Serbian, Azerbaijani as well as Mundo (Spanish) and Brasil services, the broadcaster said.

“I am thrilled to be taking on this exciting role at such an important time for the development of the World Service”, Wilson said.

“Some of the BBC’s finest and bravest journalists work for these language services and I have had the privilege of working alongside a number of them during my previous overseas postings.

"There are big challenges ahead, but the BBC is the best in the business when all its different parts pull together – something I have always encouraged wherever I have been lucky enough to work.”

Global experience

In a BBC career spanning three decades, Wilson has held a variety of editorial posts around the world. Having started as a local radio reporter in the south-east of England, he went on to work as newsroom sub-editor and a current-affairs programme producer and presenter at BBC World Service, and a TV news field producer based in the UK, Germany, Brussels and Jerusalem.

As BBC News Middle East Bureaux Editor from 2005, Wilson oversaw coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the aftermath of the war in Iraq, and was the senior BBC manager on the ground handling for four months the corporation’s response to the kidnapping of its Gaza correspondent, Alan Johnston.

As Americas Bureaux Editor in Washington, he oversaw BBC reporting of Barack Obama’s two presidential election victories, the Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Sandy and other breaking stories.

Moving to Brussels in 2013 as Europe Bureaux Editor, Wilson took charge of coverage of the Ukraine crisis, the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels, the refugee crisis, and Europe’s reaction to the Brexit referendum.

Wilson is currently Acting Regional Editor for BBC News Persian in London.

He was part of the BBC team that won an International Emmy Award in 2006 for the coverage conflict in Lebanon and was a 2007 Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University.
